This is great! Question for you, how do you funnel people to substack from your website since there’s no way to put a pop up on your website asking people to subscribe to substack m. Do you just have a “newsletter” link and it sends them to substack?
GREAT question. I embedded their sign up link on my own blog (sethw.xyz), and I've seen that done on SquareSpace set ups. I loathe pop ups, but I know they WORK. BUT.... you can also use something that DOES pop up and capture emails, in whatever system. THEN, once a week export those, and import into Substack. A few extra steps, but it might get you more signups. Definitely something to test out!
I've been wondering what to do with the emails from my shop cause they'r enot subscribing to Substack and Idk if it's legal to take those emails and put it in substack since they didn't explicitly sign up for substack but rather to get news of future products etc (which I announce via substack) lol. So Idk if thats another way I should go about it.
I'll look into the embedded link. Right now I just have newsletter and when people click on it it takes them to substack.
They’re not signing up for Substack anymore than they’re signing up for Mailchimp - they’re signing up for updates, and that’s what you’d be sending with Substack! If they don’t wanna get those updates (whether you send via Substack or Klaviyo, etc) then they’ll unsubscribe!
Absolutely loved this advice, now you've got my considering making a website of my own. Do you happen to know how to link Substack newsletter posts to a Wordpress site?
I've come to Substack before and it was down... I mean, it happens. My website goes down once in a blue moon, too! BUT... I get to call my buddy Tom and ask him what's up, and it's back online in a few minutes haha..
Growth on Substack can feel slow but also more meaningful and long term, as email is platform-agnostic. I’m still new to Substack, so I haven’t really leveraged the power or Notes or Recommendations yet but am keen to see how they work!
Notes is wild... can be very hit or miss, so I just have fun with it.
Recommendations... that's a tough one, because you can't really ask someone for one of those, you just sort of need to make a killer newsletter that people would... recommend! But once it happens, it can be amazing!

If you're just gonna show up at 10 shops and buy some pre-packaged breakfast item with zero interaction with anyone who works there, gonna take a minute to build a rapport with the "1000" followers on social media!
With the website/blog, do you take what you publish on Substack and essentially copy it to the blog space as well???
When I remember to, yes! I am WAY behind, and also setting up a whole new site OOPS
Thanks for the reminder that I need to move everything over to here… and stop with the Pinballing!!
Move things here, AND consider having your own space somehwere, too maybe!

I also have this link:
https://temicoker.co/links
so it gives them an option to go to my shop, newsletter , website etc
I use Substack as my email list too. Keeps things simple and discoverable, and I point folk to my website if they want more.

Hey Millie - not sure I'm following what you mean, can you please shoot me an email (hey@sethw.xyz) and we'll figure it out?
Mustard thanks you for this advice!
They just exported their data as suggested and is working on creating a website to have as well for Music Shelf. Because ya never know.

Absolutely! Thank you for getting my gears going!
I’ve been harping on this wisdom for over 15 years: Create a healthy mailing list that you own. That’s it.
(No—*really*, that’s it.)
Great post/interview, Seth!
Thank you! And wow, I didn’t even think of this as an interview, but you nailed it!

oooh, I love that.
That analogy with being a regular at 10 different coffee shops was *chef's kiss*
