Yes! Really appreciated this video. And I loved that you willingly acknowledged you changed your mind! You’re going to love The Creative Act. Oh and I am just now discovering Brandon Boyd has a Substack!?

RIGHT. Like BRANDON BOYD, of a little band called INCUBUS. SHEESH.

BUT - goes to show ya, people can still find stuff WITHOUT social media!

I'm not ignoring bluesky; because Bessemer Saints is still in the (constant) process of introducing ourselves to people, and will be so into the immediate future.

We're at clebsaints.bluesky.social

To your point, I happily signed up for Bluesky and Threads instantly and then spent maybe like five minutes on both networks. I've gone back to Threads a few times, but all my attention is on Twitter and Instagram.

Oh, I hear you. I still have an IG account and LinkedIn, but I also spend very little time there. Neither are on my phone. I'm just done investing all that time an energy into platforms that can disappear or lock me out for whatever reason.

I really want to close my personal social media profiles. Part of me is panicked at this idea. How will the school friend contact me from 30 years ago? (Answer if they were my friend they would know my number) How will I promote my Substack when I go live with paid subscription one day or new book(s) I am starting to write? (Think you just answered this one!) All totally fuelled by big anxiety. Starting work on that way of being as needs to change.

Closing my personal social accounts was a bummer because I do miss my internet friends and people who were actual friends but I don't really stay in contact with. It is a bit like It's A Wonderful Life and you no longer exist to hundreds of people but also, I don't miss being on social media. My wife also quit and instead of spending hours online, she's read nearly 100 books this year.

Yes I I have started to turn off my phone completely for half a day at a time to help me use other non screen mediums like physical books. Find it relaxing having my phone off and avoiding all social media for periods of time.

Exactly! None of us started out GLUED to our phones. It happened a little bit at a time, and it's going to take the same journey to go the other way.

And I love that you turn your phone OFF for half a day!

All valid concerns and fears! I think the biggest thing to remember is that nothing has to be CONCRETE, or black and white. You don't HAVE to close down an account, just use it less, and fill up that time with something else. I use Facebook maybe 2 minute a WEEK, but I still haven't closed up the account.

Yes you are right - no need to close it. Yet for me it seems to feel the same as drinking alcohol. I cannot simply have 1 or 2 drinks, so I banned it from my life.

Currently I have block on my phone for all the ‘bad’ distractions like FB. It makes me open up my computer if I ‘need’ to go on FB - which funnily enough is only about once a month to post an update on health for distant family etc. It means I can still be contacted via messenger on my phone but not spend hours scrolling the app. Compromise is possible!

I have my phone block Google News in Safari for me. After deleting my social media apps my brain found a way to keep consuming and drinking from the firehose of news. Don't miss that one bit!

agree with this! i remember when Threads came out and i spent like 3 days on it and then realised that it was just Twitter Again and i've never been a big fan of using Twitter because of how much you need to use it in order to get anything out of it. i'm gonna stick to substack and instagram and leave it at that.

I did the same thing! Then I went to deactivate my account and it wanted to delete Instagram, too, and I was like woah, wait a minute!

I'm with you, too... I use Instagram to keep up with some runners, designers, creative people doing there thing. There's no other way to keep up with what they're doing otherwise :(
