Honestly, what a great motivator of a post. I found myself going down the Instagram rabbit hole again a few months ago and now I'm back to monitoring my time on it. I'm making sure to stop checking it when I'm bored, I think I only look at it maybe once or twice a day now, and completely stopped looking at the Explore page. Gotta say, it's made me feel better.
Writing a newsletter about what I love, getting my thoughts down about the horror genre every week, makes me feel more accomplished than scrolling for hours.
YESSSS - being present enough to see when you're getting lost on IG or any social platform is huge. And then to replace that lost time in a good way. You're doing great!
Yes x 1000. I did the whole "sharing my things on Twitter and Instagram and LinkedIn," forever! And the trickle of subscribes came from that.. then I decided, "no, the few hundred people on my email list is enough. Write for THEM." And my goodness, best move I've made!
An interesting read, thank you. I think Instagram is pretty stagnant for me right now but Substack isn't much different to be honest, my growth is super slow here. I still like Instagram because that's where most visual artists hang out and we support each other and I haven't seen galleries moving to Substack yet - the art industry is always slow to change. I can see how Notes could become an alternative to Instagram for artists and galleries who just want to share and market their work but not write a blog, but there'd be no money in that for Substack so not sure how that would work. It's going to be fascinating watching how this platform develops this year.
thank YOU! I would caution against waiting for this (or any) platform to evolve, as I feel like we're just waiting on the powers that be to do what's best for them (as they always do). We're always gonna be let down by those folks haha...
RIGHT??! Oh look at this band playing in front of sold out rooms, and being on tour, and.. oh, they're still not making any money? They STILL have to eat at Taco Bell? Did they graduate to Chipotle?
Ahhhh thank you so much! I sometimes fear that I'm veering off course too much, that I need to talk more about landing pages and open rates, but then I'm like... NOPE... this is way more fun haha

Your success with this newsletter is so inspiring! And now I get to say that I was a subscriber before it was cool. :D
One of the OG subscribers, and I appreciate you!!!
I deleted all the social media apps off my phone. I’m not bothering anymore with the time suck or trying to post my Substack. Not worth it.

By the way- have you seen the "Substack Income Transparency Project" ? https://open.substack.com/pub/annacodrearado/p/how-much-do-writers-actually-make?r=j3n0n&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
I DID, but then forgot about it until now. Thanks for the reminder!
Fire post as always, your work always motivates me to get back to work and push myself creatively 💪
Yes yes YES! So happy to hear that. Keep it going!

A group of us on Substack can attest to what you say. This is what we ended up doing:

"Woah," said like Neo in the Matrix. This is quite something!
Thnx! Shout out to @Miter for organizing this, here on the‘Stack
That Taco Bell commercial is so sad. 💔😭

You’re awesome. Glad I subscribed.
