If you're writing/talking/playing to 5-10 people; one of your chief secondary messages to them should be "tell other folks about us". In this highly segmented and silo'ed cultural world, it doesn't occur to ordinary folks that they can do this, and have an effect.
Talk is the oxygen of a music culture, however; and they certainly will have an effect.
