"Get in front of people, IRL. Become unforgettable with your work, play your music on the street, show up in wild places!" - THIS! I always say - become someone people would miss if you were gone.
I met two of my favorite people through an online course of his back in like 2020, and we talk just about week. That’s wild he endorsed one of your books!
Your post here is so relevant and en pointe ! Thank you! I have not posted on social media for three weeks and already feel more elevated . Developing and nurturing a community here is so much more satisfying . Emailing, writing letters , phone calls all matter . Social media has lost its way .
thanks, Seth for sharing . . . the thing is, there are more social posts than any of us can read in a lifetime, so WE should be the ones imposing our own algorithm on the social media networks :-)
Ugh, YES! I was in a funk all day because I wanted to promote something and already had a terrible feeling about the fact that it would get zero response or feedback from anyone. You got me!
An announcement of mine totally flopped today. Hilariously. Out of the 13k people who follow me on Instagram, three liked it. And two of those likes were my partner and my best friend. I kept it up for about three hours before admitting defeat and just archiving the post. It feels terrible. The complete lack of visibility is just delating and putting any effort into it is NOT worth it anymore. And all the joy I once found in the app? The sense of connection and community? Gone. I've considered just burning it all down and deleting it so. many. times. But I always chicken out.
Anyway, I reaaaally needed to read this right now. It helped put things into perspective for me. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and encouragement!
Wise words as always, and a lovely photo Seth. I’m intrigued by the idea of having an iMessage/SMS group for things like spontaneous art drops, but in such a way that all the recipients don’t get bombarded by messages when someone replies. I guess I gotta look into that…
Maybe tools like Slack or Discord could be better for that. They both have real apps, and then it's night super tied to our PHONES, you know? And our numbers. SMS is SOOO tricky for marketing, since it's SO personal.
Somebody will tell me they have 2000 followers on IG. I’m like, “How many people saw your latest post?”. Most don’t know about Insights. But maybe they look and say something like “24”. And I’m like, “You have 24 followers…”

Totally! And if you can’t do it in person, be the person that people love to show up in the comments / replies!
And yep - like Seth Godin said in Linchpin, would people miss you if you left?
LOVE Seth. He inspired me to self-publish back in 2012. Then later endorsed one of my (traditionally published) books. He has truly changed my life.

There you go. We can’t wait for them to make it safer or better, we have to take that power back for ourselves
…i am here to announce to crickets and grasshoppers…just don’t let the mosquitos find out or i am sending in the spiders…

Hey, I like that angle!

Oh noooo, no funks!!! Time to do better things with our days (I have a group call on Thurs, I hope you can join us!!!)
What does FOMO mean?
Fear of missing out!
Holy shit, Seth. This is FIRE! Preach baby! 👊🏻
Oh, you! Thank you Zach!

Oh noooo, I’m so sorry! That is so deflating. Can you announce your thing here to your Substack readers?
Absolutely! My energy is definitely best spent here, not on the other platforms.
People on social media are there to be on social media. If you can get ANY of them to get on your email list it’s a miracle!

And thanks for the compliment on my photo!

Yeah, you’re right.
I love your stance on this. Thank you so much 🙏
Thank YOU! House of cards!

WOW. But hey, if they had 4000 followers, maybe they'd get 48 views.
Might as well just work on getting 50 email subscribers, huh?
Preach!
