I’m very tempted to quit Instagram in 2024 and just see what happens. I’m not in the position where I have thousands of followers or a huge email list to bring over to Substack, and I haven’t seen much organic growth on the ‘stack yet--that’s what makes me hesitate. Gonna give it some thought.

I brought just 19 people from an email list and got MAYBE a dozen of my 2,500 Twitter followers to sign up here on Substack, but now I'm nearing 700 subscribers, about half of which came from Substack Recommendations. Some came from an interview I did with an independent musician; she had a decent-sized YouTube following, which helped. There's a handful of other ways I drove subscribers in an organic, non-gross way, which weren't social media at all.

Hello, discovery this wonderful newsletter today and dude, i'm in love LOL, because that's what i want for my life, live doing my projects, arts and whatever without social media to show what i do or doing...i'll like to know if a new podcast, from scratch, could survive and grow a audience without social media? What you think? Thank you so much for this newsletter...i'm sorry for my bad english...cheers from Brazil!

Hi Tom! Thanks for the kind words :)

I think a podcast could start without social media, absolutely. Tell all your friends about it, in your network. Shoot 'em some emails, even call em up! Send them the link.

AND - everyone you interview or have as a guest on the show, they'll probably share it on THEIR social media networks, right?

At the end of the day, though, you've got to produce something that's worth talking about. If listeners aren't telling their friends, ask yourself why? And then, eh, if it's just for them, how do you find YOUR tribe?

You can absolutely do this!
