People are craving real in-person connection. Extending my substack by creating real gatherings is something I'm working on this year.

Ooooh, I've been thinking of that more and more, meeting in real life at different sorts of venues!

Social media is soul sucking when you're a creative person, it's the number one thing that makes me feel like what I have to say and what I want to share is completely worthless. The second I step away from social media, I feel free

Yes, keep stepping away! You don't need to delete all your accounts on Dec 31st at midnight to be free hah - do what you can, here and there, and eventually you can step away and focus on the work / art / "content" you WANT to be doing.

Oh Seth, I AM dreaming of a world without SM and am very happy to have found your Substack. As a result of the welcoming and encouraging atmosphere here I am gracefully sliding over to Substack. Procrastination and fear of writing badly was finally put aside today when I published my first post (what DO we call our Substack publications?)

Oh, welcome Hazel! Glad you're here. And I usually just call it "my newsletter," or sometimes "my Substack." And each thing we write, I sort of just call them posts!

I do a monthly gig with a group listed on a bookstore calendar for open jams. Sometimes you just have to go outside to find gigs!

aw it's to see the little Substack ecosystem spark new things. glad we both gave each other inspiration this week! i schedule posts 3 times a week for Instagram now, and then just let it run for the week only checking it a couple times a day. i know that it's taking care of itself, and then i can focus on other things.

Such excellent points Seth! They defin want to keep you on the death scroll! I lost some "followers" when I told them I was hopping over here to SS, but quite a few did follow me over. Those folks that did are my main focus now. They are the real followers. I still have IG and post maybe once a week, if that. It feels so good not to have that as my focus anymore--like I'm free from an abusive relationship.

I’ve reduced my instagram posts slowly over the last couple of years and have lost 30k followers. Lots of reasons - people leaving, people being bored with me (I rarely do reels!) and the algorithm... I want to let go once and for all but I’m trying to bring more followers over here first... It’s tough, I feel like I’m trapped!! Thanks for your offering, I really enjoy reading it!

Oh, I hear you! Out of my 2500+ Twitter followers, I got like 20 or so to sign up for my Substack. But I deleted my account earlier this year and have focused on the subscribers I have right here, and I've been loving it.

What number of IG followers subscribing to your Substack would you be happy with?

20 a week would be a nice steady amount... I’d be happy with that!

Could that be about 3 DMs per day to people who like and comment on your posts? That's some door to door sales work, for sure, but probably better than making dancing videos or whatever haha

Let me know how it works! It seems like it SHOULD work, contacting your "most engaged" followers, but still, lots of friction to get people to actually click anything!
