Your Marketing Should Be As Unique as Your Art
Maybe doing what everyone else is doing isn't the answer
Heads up; HEAVY METAL EMAIL is now SOCIAL MEDIA ESCAPE CLUB.
Artist Louise Stigell says, “just because other businesses (are super annoying, and sales-y, and in people’s face, and really eager) in your inbox does not mean that you have to behave that way.”
Many creative folks send boring emails.
It’s mullet marketing, and you have my permission to do way better.
“You can totally do email marketing in a way that is authentic to you, that feels genuine,” says Louise, “that doesn't feel pushy. Or sleazy.
You can have your entire personality and your integrity intact and you can still make a living doing what you love - because that's the point.”
We started creating art to break away from the norm. Yet, when trying to get the word out, we conform to what everybody else is doing.
The technology of algorithms, the labels, the gatekeepers, the publishers, the media - none of them can stop you from connecting directly with a fan today via a simple email.
Show up fully in your email marketing.
Make your website as wonderful and impactful as your art.
The opposite of boring and safe isn’t “sign up for TikTok and make dance videos.”
It’s showing up 100% as your true self, and giving fully who you are as an artist.
ANTI-SOCIAL - A vulgar display of social media hostility
Ready to (maybe) pay $1 to post to Twitter?
Instagram says sorry “for adding 'terrorist' to some Palestinian user bios.”
Something else no one asked for: Threads’ latest growth hack is showing posts on Facebook
Showing up as my true self means not sending prompts on Mondays anymore.
Below was my process for finding all that anyway, so now you can do it for yourself.
➡️ Use sites like Days Of The Year, National Day Calendar, and this big list on the United Nations website. Find something that resonates with you and share it with your audience.
➡️ Go to the Wikipedia front page, and click on the current date.
From there, you can search (Ctrl-F) for things like vocalist, artist, photographer, writer, etc to find notable birthdays and passings.
➡️ Find notable anniversaries via Google by using a variation of this search:
10/20/30 year anniversary [book / album / movie] 2023
From there, you gotta do some digging to find actual release dates, but it’ll get you started in the right direction.
