REPLAY: WEBSITES, WORD OF MOUTH, AND BREAKING UP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA

A recording from Seth Werkheiser's live video

Thank you Jes Raymond, mary beth kaplan🪶, Diane, Stephanie Graham, Claire Machado, and many others for tuning into my live stream!

On today’s live stream I talked about how to reach new folks without social media.

1. Jess Raymond’s story: 150 people, a new town, zero social media (12:00) She emailed the local newspaper, called the local radio station, passed a clipboard from the stage, and walked away with 35 new email subscribers. Read more about that here.

2. Your website is like a shingle — put something up now (21:00) You’ve been updating social media eight times a day and nobody sees it. A Google Doc or a $20 Carrd site with your name, what you do, and how to reach you is plenty.

3. Promote other people in your orbit (22:00) Use your newsletter to shine a light on artists you admire. That’s how scenes used to work, and we can do it again!

4. Social media is like a bad partner (33:12) It tells you you’re nothing without me, keeps you from your audience, and punishes you for linking offsite. You wouldn’t put up with that from a person.

5. Get your awareness off your own plate (41:45) Stop shouting about yourself on social media. Get on other people’s podcasts, newsletters, and YouTube channels — that’s how new people actually find you.

I go live throughout the week, and host Escape Pods, too; regular Zoom call where we figure this stuff out together. See our full schedule here: https://luma.com/escape-pods
