This is how you can start a Social Media Escape Plan.
Sign up for Substack, and tell people to sign up. In this case, Pissed Jeans put up this Instagram post, said “link in bio,” and now they have an email list.
Their reasoning sounds legit, too:
Rather than rely on the mercy of the proprietary Meta™ algorithms to let people know when we have a show coming up or new shirt or whatever, directly emailing you, the Pissed Jeans Enthusiast, seemed like it could be fun.
Because it’s TRUE.
If you have 1,000 followers on Twitter, there’s a good chance you’re reaching maybe 5% of your fans (Buffer, who knows a thing or two about social media, reaches about 2% of their audience on Twitter).
If you have an email list of 1,000 subscribers, you’ll probably reach 20-30% of your fans - and without having to stare at your phone six hours a day “making content,” (check out “You Don’t Need More Jobs” for more about that).
GROW YOUR EMAIL LIST WITH PRE-SAVES?
Found this bit of gold from James Shotwell over at the Haulix Blog , from ‘The True Value of Spotify Pre-Save Campaigns.’
If pre-save campaigns don’t matter to Spotify, what value do they offer artists?
Spotify may not have access to your pre-save campaign data, but you do, and that can help you navigate fan relationships. The data you gather from your campaign will tell you who enjoys your music, wants to know about your latest news, and—depending on the service you choose—how to reach them. You can add those individuals to your mailing list, send them personalized thank you notes, offer early access to your next tour on sale, etc. From there, the possibilities for community building are virtually endless.
Get people’s permission to add their email to your list, and then email them relevant, engaging, interesting content. It doesn’t take all that long to write an email, and like I said earlier in this email, it’s better than staring at your phone for six hours a day and making dance videos.
“We're a thrash band comprised of ghosts of vengeance. We shouldn't be doing funny hand dances, or the running man,” says Professor Pizza of Axeslasher.
