In the war against social media algorithms, you’re going to have to engage in some hand to hand combat, as perfectly illustrated here by @Breezyb215:
If you’ve fighting and clawing your way for every listen and fan, do things that don’t scale - take Brianna’s advice and reach out.
RT’ing or liking a fan is nice, but an unpaid intern can’t reach out with a voice message.
Say thanks, offer something awesome (a “lead magnet,” like I wrote about here), and eventually give them a link to subscribe to your email list.
But Seth, why is it a big deal to build and grow an email list?
“On our @Buffer account, we reach about 2 percent of our followers on average with each tweet.”
Buffer is a company whose business is publishing Tweets for other companies, so they know a lot about Twitter, and even they are still only reaching 2% of their fans via the platform.
TWO PERCENT.
Reaching your fans on any social media platform is a war.
It will continue to get harder to reach your fans, and the longer you wait to develop your social media escape plan, the further behind you’ll be when you finally decide enough is enough.
Figure out your “sell” before you post a single “sign up for updates” post that no one will click (I wrote about that here).
Start saving some of your best work (photos, writing, etc) for your newsletter.
Tell people to sign up to get more of your best work (that you’ll now post less often on socials).
Send out weekly newsletters.
Growing your subscriber list to the same number of social media followers will feel like an eternity, but remember that we stare at social media platforms for hours every day. You can grow and thrive with an email list with a few hours per week, which leaves more time to work on your craft.
EMAIL CAMPAIGN IDEAS FOR DECEMBER:
🔈WRAPPED BUT MAKE IT EMAIL
You know all those Spotify Wrapped images that were being shared on socials this week? Well, people who don’t follow you on social didn’t see them, so why not send those Wrapped images to your email list?
It’s a great way to bolster your love for your fans, too. Set up a 20% discount for your store and include that with your thanks email and see what happens.
🎁 DIGITAL HOLIDAY GIFTS
It’s hard enough to get your fans to turn away from BestBuy and Target runs during the holidays, and then there’s shipping delays for all your records and shirts.
Maybe think about a holiday-themed video stream, digital download, or other digital product like a lyric book?
We live in a world where people are spending $1000s on NFTs. You probably have a handful of fans who’d buy some sort of digital product from you for the holidays.
Charge a few bucks, and do a live chat with your fans about holiday movies, sports, best metal albums of the year, and throw 50% to a local animal shelter or something similar.
❤️ Think it’s too late for something for this month? VALENTINES DAY IS COMING. What can you conjure up by then?
